The summer of 1965 was a lot fun, swimming at the Lover’s Point and at the Monterey Peninsula Country Club. Hanging out with friends and playing summer basketball.
I decided to play football again and went out for the Junior Varsity. I was still too small. August was very hot during double sessions for football. We would hit the pool at the Sunset Apartments, Sunset @ Forest, between sessions.
1965 would be the first year that P.G. High would be using it’s own football field located at Sunset and Congress. The stands were not built yet and the home side was closest to Congress Avenue.
We won back the “Shoe” this year with a 26-18 win at home over Carmel High School. It was quite a celebration on the field.
It was my final year of Lightweight Basketball and the final year for this league. There were a few of us that had to lose weight before the weigh ins. Lightweight Basketball was made up of players that had to be under a certain point status based on height, weight, and age. These factors kept the league on an even status with all teams.
The Junior/Senior Prom was held in the gymnasium this year.
New bands starting in 1965-66: The Doors, Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane , Buffalo Springfield, Cream, and Eric Burden and the Animals.
Movies: The Sound of Music, Thunderball, Cat Ballou, Alfie, Hawaii, and Grand Prix to name a few.
