Pacific Grove High School: Senior 1966-1967

As we began our Senior year it was without a doubt the best school year for me. The previous three years had all led up to this and we were going to make the best year in high school.

Football season was incredible, suffering only one loss to King City 13-0. Defeating Carmel 41-14 at Carmel to keep the shoe for two years in a row. The rally bus ride to away games. The rally for the King City game had Bob Berg, Roger Parks and I dressed up like King City cheerleaders riding in on a Ford Mustang and being drenched by the Breaker wave and embarrassing Dennis Rockwell at the mircophone. Remember the small boxes of Sugar Crisps we took to the Carmel game, it gave the varsity extra powers.

I remember all the Rec Club dances that year. It was so much fun having live bands to dance and listen to.

Basketball season was incredible for me, playing ball with the guys I had played with on Lightweight basketball. We were on varsity now. It was a great year.
The Winter Ball dance in the Multi-Purpose building.

The Senior activities; Bolado Park in Hollister and the chicken fights in the pool. The Senior Prom once again in the gymnasium, dinner ay Neil DeVaughns on Cannery Row. Senior yearbook signing at Doc Rickettes place on Cannery Row.

Graduation on the football field and who could forget our Senior song, “The Days they are a Changing” by Bob Dylan.

The All-Night party starting at the Outrigger for dinner and dancing, a movie at the Steinbeck Theater and bowling at Cypress Bowl in Monterey and getting home after sunrise.

These four years have a very lasting memory for me, friends and classmates, some have already left us much too early. Some of us were together from elementary school to graduation from high school.

I will always have the fond memories of those times and growing up in Pacific Grove. We all have a link between us that can never be broken. One common ground and experience that forever ties us together.

Did you have experiences in Pacific Grove you would like to share?

Pacific Grove High School: Junior 1965-1966

The summer of 1965 was a lot fun, swimming at the Lover’s Point and at the Monterey Peninsula Country Club. Hanging out with friends and playing summer basketball.

I decided to play football again and went out for the Junior Varsity. I was still too small. August was very hot during double sessions for football. We would hit the pool at the Sunset Apartments, Sunset @ Forest, between sessions.

1965 would be the first year that P.G. High would be using it’s own football field located at Sunset and Congress. The stands were not built yet and the home side was closest to Congress Avenue.

We won back the “Shoe” this year with a 26-18 win at home over Carmel High School. It was quite a celebration on the field.

It was my final year of Lightweight Basketball and the final year for this league. There were a few of us that had to lose weight before the weigh ins. Lightweight Basketball was made up of players that had to be under a certain point status based on height, weight, and age. These factors kept the league on an even status with all teams.

The Junior/Senior Prom was held in the gymnasium this year.

New bands starting in 1965-66: The Doors, Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane , Buffalo Springfield, Cream, and Eric Burden and the Animals.

Movies: The Sound of Music, Thunderball, Cat Ballou, Alfie, Hawaii, and Grand Prix to name a few.

Television: Dick Clark’s Where the Action Is, Lost in Space, The Dean Martin Show, The Wild, Wild, West, and I Dream of Jeannie.

Pacific Grove High School: Sophmore 1964-1965

At the beginning of my Sophmore year I was a little more confident with who I was and with high school.

I didn't go out for football because I was still too small and not big enough for Junior Varsity. We did not fair well against Carmel again losing 20-13 at Carmel. I believe it was 10 years in a row at this point. Still played our home games at the Junior High School field.

Late 1964, Shindig premiered on ABC featuring 60's musical acts and St. Louis beat New York in the World Series. I remember carrying a transistor radio and listening to the World Series between classes and at lunch.

The first James Bond movie, Goldfinger, came out in December, it was the beginning of 007 which still popular today.

During the school year Joan Baez came to the school to perform in one of the classrooms.

As the year turned into 1965, more great music was on the horizon; The Zombies, Gerry and the Pacemakers, The Animals, Petula Clark,The Temptations, to name a few.

It was a year of developing new friendships and more school involvement.
Pacific Grove was still a dry town in the 60's, in that there were no bars or liquor stores within the city limits. But if you went past David Avenue you had liquor store located across the street. It was still a family town and it still had that family feeling.

The high school was still surrounded by a forest on two sides. Nothing really changed within the city. It was still a great place to grow up in. We didn't need to be entertained, there were plenty of things to do.

Technology was still years ahead and we were left to entertain ourselves. The dances at Rec Club were alot of fun, can't forget Ruby Nodello who ran Rec Club.

Asilomar Beach was still the place to go. Surfing, beach fires, the sand dunes and sand surfing.
